Baby, it’s COLD outside! These cold temperatures mean that we’re be spending more time indoors in close quarters with others, which means we’ll be coming into contact with more bacteria and viruses. Cold and flu season is here! Thankfully, I have a secret weapon. I keep a bottle of Thieves essential oil blend with me at all times through the cold and flu season months…well, actually, all year. Germs don’t take a vacation in the summertime either!
D. Gary Young, founder of Young Living Essential Oils, created the Thieves blend based on research regarding the legend of a band of four thieves in France who robbed the bodies of plague victims. When they were arrested, they were offered leniency in sentencing in exchange for the recipe for the blend of herbs and spices they would rub on themselves to protect from the plague. This proprietary blend works to keep you healthy in the same way that pharmaceutical antibiotics would, but is all natural. The most powerful ingredient in this germ killer oil is Clove oil, which is the highest scoring single oil on the ORAC scale (which is one of the most sensitive and reliable methods for measuring a substance’s antioxidant capacity). Clove is highly antiviral and antibacterial, and has a delicious, sweet scent. Clove is blended with Lemon (powerful antioxidant), Cinnamon Bark (digestive aid and support), Eucalyptus Radiata (highly antibacterial) and Rosemary (energizing and antimicrobial) to create the most powerful natural “antibiotic” on the market today. A 1997 study at Weber State University found Thieves blend to be 99.96% effective in killing airborne micro-organisms when diffused.
Young Living has an entire line of Thieves products, from a household cleaner to toothpaste, but my favorite go to product is the oil itself. There are so many ways to use it to help protect yourself from getting sick. The best place to apply Thieves oil is to the bottoms of the feet, just a couple of drops is enough. The skin on the bottoms of the feet is a little thinner, so the oils will be easily absorbed into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body to do their work. The bottoms of the feet also have “Vitaflex” points that correspond to all of the body systems, so you can effect any part of the body by stimulating its point on the feet. I personally also love to apply Thieves to my chest so that I can breathe it in, especially at night when I am sleeping. The other place I like to apply thieves is on my neck over my lymph nodes. I really only do this when I’ve been around a lot of people who are sick or if I feel like I am getting sick myself. I like for the thieves oil to be able to get right into my lymph nodes where all of the yucky toxins get filtered. I feel like it gives them an extra boost! But be sure to dilute with vegetable oil or coconut oil first, otherwise your neck will get quite warm and this can be a little uncomfortable in this sensitive area.
Thieves essential oil is also great for diffusing. The study mentioned above proved that Thieves will kill almost every airborne micro-organism in the room. Sometimes it seems like everyone at my job gets sick at the same time, and when this happens I love to bring in my diffuser and diffuse thieves in our break room. The scent is really comforting and it makes the well people a little less nervous about getting sick! Thieves can also be taken internally. The easiest way to do this is by putting a drop or two into a capsule and swallowing it. I like to add a drop to my Ningxia Red when I take it in the morning, and give my immune system a really big boost! I love having a natural way to boost my immunity and kill germs without resorting to toxic chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs!
